And now, for something completely different :wow: Not my usual subject matter, but upon hearing that an overnight fire had resulted in a couple buildings in downtown Plattsmouth, NE being encased in ice, it was too tempting to document. What you see here is the result of fighting a fire in single digit temperatures  While the fire ravaged several businesses (mainly the Quart House Pub), it did create for a very unique and surreal scene :) Thoughts are with all those affected, and hats off to the seven fire crews who responded to this blaze. :salute:

We had a fire like this in my town in the dead of winter a few years ago; the hotel that caught fire (but survived!) looks awesome covered in ice.

"Signle digit temperatures", I'm like, that's not too bad? But then I realize, "Ohhhh, Fahrenheit, NOT Celsius!" Silly imperial measurements.

This photo reminds me of our local civic center; the icicles hang off the building every year from off the top of the roof, stairs, and windows. We tend to go from -1 up to 30 then down to -25 and up to almost 40(for a couple of days) during the first month of wintertime, so water jumps back and forth between sloughing off roofs to freezing into tons of icicles the next day.

I wanted to take pictures of it, but I didn't bring my camera with me, and I'm pretty sure this warm weekend has melted the icicles away.

I'm sorry to hear about the fires- hopefully, the buildings are saveable. I have to say: Despite the fact that I see this kind of stuff in the winter all the time as we get far below zero every year, and stay there for most of it, you guys have a lot of moisture in the air so I can't imagine how cold it must be.

I pray it heats up soon,

Ezzi

I've been in situations like that before, we've had fire trucks freeze to the ground before because of all the ice build up.  Awesome shot!

The Plattsmouth Fire Department soon realized that they were all too effective at fighting fires and accidentally triggered a second Ice Age.

Interesting! I had seen this image or a similar one when googling the polar vortex.  It is definitely a powerful statement to the elements, both fire and ice as well as the people who put themselves in the middle! :) Thank you so much for sharing your work.
