Tornado Composite - Arthur, IA by FramedByNature Tornado Composite - Arthur, IA by FramedByNature
*To clarify first and foremost: there were not three tornadoes on the ground at the same time. As stated in the title, this is a composite image*

On April 9th, 2011, *INTOtheRFD and I chased the storm that went on to produce the Mapleton, IA tornado (the first substantial town of the season to be hit, setting the tone for the months to come). It was absolutely surreal to pull over and shoot this tornado in absolute silence, accompanied by the occasional flickers of lightning. The only sound I recall was the distant "ooh"s and "whoa!"s of another group of chasers. These three images were taken over the course of about 2 minutes. I overlaid the images in order to show how the shape of this tornado near Arthur, IA evolved.

Please tell me what you think!

nice composite time lapse! We can see that the funnel doubled in diameter in no time. Any casualties out of that one?

I was always fascinated to see tornadoes happening. we do not have many of those in lithuania. last year only one or two were saw and captured to a film or a photo by man. one question, though. why is the quality so poor?

This was taken at night, so there was no light other than the occasional flash of lightning. Had to use a high ISO.

Which one was the first and how much time in between did you take the pictures. I know u said it was 2 minutes total. I'm just wondering because of the gap between the tornado stages.

Goes left to right. Probably a little more time between the second two. Couldn't tell you exactly lol

It's still pretty awesome and frightening. I honestly couldn't tell you if I would stand there and take pics or run for my life even though it's off in the distance.
