An updraft explodes against the cap (lid of warm air in the atmosphere) in south-central Kansas on a hot summer day. When storms are fighting the cap, often these pileus clouds form. Pileus clouds are smooth, lenticular clouds found atop storm updrafts. If the cap gets broken, the storm sheds the pileus and continues to develop upward.
