:star: Witness the power of nature...:star:

Canon 60D
Bower 14mm

There's nothing like catching a gorgeously-structured storm in your home state! Caught this supercell while chasing with Cody Ervin west of West Point, NE just as it began to spin. Watched it evolve from a moderately-rounded base to this highly-striated stack of plates in a span of about 15 minutes :wow: A very humbling process to watch. This was taken right as the structure peaked. Unfortunately, the storm would soon begin to get shrouded in rain, and the "show" was over as soon as it began :( Still, so glad I got to witness this! Would have sucked missing structure like this only an hour from home.

Loooove stuff like this, but don't live in the right area to see it with my own eyes. (Did see something that might have generated this while I was traveling through South Dakota once, but it was pretty far away and got rain-wrapped right away so I couldn't tell. Even that looked cool, though.) Anyway, glad you got to see & capture this yourself. Beautiful, powerful, WOW!

This is gorgeous! And also a little terrifying. What exactly is a supercell?

Let's see if I can get this right.

From what I understand, a supercell is a thunderstorm that contains an area where uprising air circulates around a vertical axis. Supercells are usually have strong winds, hail, and rain. Their offspring include tornados.

It looks like the beginning of a tornado. Not that I know what that looks like. Haha. How did you get into storm chasing?

The mesocyclone (that wall of rotating air) does give birth to tornadoes in the rear as conditions behind there have to be met to have such events happen. Something about the rear down draft forcing the rotating end to touchdown to the ground. The same event that creates the tornado also eventually ends it as it chokes the rotating air to be feed from the ground. Beyond that, I have no more knowledge.

I got a little interest in weather after a little dip into space. Being a curious kid back then and all. :giggle: Got to love books and the Discovery Channel.

congrats on DD chaser! so well deserved! this is a beautiful storm, you can almost see it spinning like a top in the photo and that's amazing. you captured its rotation beautifully and this is a nicely structured cell. Ther're so rare in my neck of the woods but we do get a few bangers here and there, so this is just beautiful!
