When we returned to Squaw Creek NWR on March 6th, we were greeted by an even greater number of geese than several days prior. Probably not a hugely noticeable difference between 1.3 and 1.4 million geese (according to the refuge workers' counts) but it was crazy nonetheless. Whenever they take to the air like this, you can usually thank an eagle for flying too close to them. They lift off in a "zipper" pattern, sometimes all the way across the lake, creating a sort of "vortex" once they start to circle back down to land. If you can get the right angle on this, you can get some really unique shots. A million geese is a million geese, but having some groups closer, some farther, and some in the air in between really gives the image some depth. That's why this is one of my favorite images from our Spring 2011 trip to Squaw Creek :)

This is rather unbelievable. The noise must've been huge... as would've been the chance of receiving a package on your head or car.
