A little iridescence, anyone? :wow: Ventured out to a parking lot behind south campus originally just to check out this massive pile of snow they created from clearing the lot. When I started to shoot the snow, I noticed the insane colors in the clouds, and well, that ended up being far more interesting than the pile of snow! =D The iridescence was likely so crazy due to the cold weather. When the moisture from the clouds formed, it froze almost instantaneously. Since these crystals all formed and froze at the same time, they were very consistent in size and shape. This consistency is what makes for the best iridescence, and produces the vibrant colors you see here :)

**This has not been "photoshopped" past normal post-processing means. The image has undergone a standard brightness/contrast adjustment, but I did not add any of the colors you see here**

Ooh, lovely shot. I actually saw a circumhorizontal arc (which appears to be what you're describing, forgive me if it's something else) just today a few hours ago, but it wasn't even half as spectacular as this one.

Different optical phenomenon but equally stunning :) A local photographer friend of mine caught one in the area the same morning I took this. Wish I could have seen it! Circumzenithal arcs are always seen overhead in a curved shape. Iridescence is something that can occur anywhere in the sky (though usually fairly close to the sun) along the edge of clouds.

I actually get this quite often in the mountains of NC. They always surprise me with their beauty though!

Yeah, probably the Appalachians assisting in the development of the clouds with some orographic lift  The colors are always stunning, but this was the best I had seen!

Although, I think I've been listening to too much of the NightVale podcasts because I immediately thought "All hale the mighty glow cloud" upon seeing this.

Most of the photos you put on here are spectacular so it's really not a surprise that this one is just as amazing. :aww:

As for Night Vale,it's pretty interesting, and it's free! If you feel like looking it up you can find it on itunes and a few other places. Just, make sure to play close attention if you start listening otherwise you'll get so lost.  No pressure or anything to find it, just so you know--and if anyone says something about a "glow cloud" you'll know where it's from. :giggle:
