Look out, neighborhood, there's an electrical storm brewing In order to shoot lightning to the north, I have to drive a few blocks from my house to a clear horizon. Unfortunately, seeing this clear northern horizon also involves standing rather close to an electrical plant. I wasn't too concerned this time, since the bolts were some 20 miles away, but I stood as far away from the plant as I could (a couple hundred yards). Definitely not the place to shoot if there's a close storm
We passed a HUGE transmission station (and a nuclear power plant actually) on the way to chase one storm in June - actually considered stopping there just because it WAS a potential lightning magnet. But we elected to keep going until we hit a river for a better line of sight on the storm. Hills are indeed the best though, even if it tends to mean no cover if you need it...
