Crow Instability by FramedByNature Crow Instability by FramedByNature
:star: Witness the power of nature...:star:

Wish I got a better shot of this, but I was shooting a high school football game for yearbook so I had other responsibilities =D Looked up above during the game and saw this awesomely-shaped contrail. This phenomenon is called crow instability. The chromosome-like shapes are caused by the wingtip vortices interacting with the contrail vapor.

Whoa this is freaky! I have not seen or heard of this before. How cool you should look up at that precise moment AND have that camera handy! I learned something new today-thanks!

When I saw the thumbnail for this photo, the first thing that came to mind were anti-missile flares. Way cool. Is this phenomenon depended on exacting atmospheric variables? I've been staring at contrails since I was old enough to know what they were, and I have yet to see this effect.

Wait til the conspiracists get a hold of it. It'll become a newer and deadlier yet "chem-trail." (Seriously, give it time.) ;)

Yeah, I'm kind of waiting. That's why I included the explanation in the description :P It's so silly how many views something can get if you label it as a "chemtrail" lol.

Chemtrail people don't appear to want the facts. I was impressed that you researched it and glad you included the facts. I remember seeing some "curly-que" type contails many years ago that I found curious and had not seen before and I wondered what the conspiracy people were going to do with those. lol ;)

Very neat!

I also just joined yearbook! I wish I would have joined years ago, but now I only have one year of it :(
