Canyon's Winter Majesty

Witness the power of nature...


Spearfish Canyon, SD. A gorgeous sight in winter, but all the more so under the ideal light in which we witnessed it. The previous night, we had received anywhere between 4 and 10 inches of fresh powder (tough to tell in the Black Hills). This caused us to pack up our tents and get a hotel for the night. When we returned to the canyon in the morning shortly after sunrise, we were greeted with what could only be described as a winter wonderland. Ponderosa pines covered in snow, the cliff faces donning their own white caps, and fresh animal footprints along the ground. When we started along the Roughlock Falls trail, we were the only people around. It was mostly cloudy, but we had our eye on some gaps between the morning cumulus floating in front of the sun. Farther down the trail, the flat light was blown away as the sun broke through the clouds casting golden rays onto parts of the canyon. We had to stop and shoot. Scenes like this lasted only a few seconds, and the "good light" was very localized, but that made it all the more special
