17: Chaos of Frost

Description

Day 17: One of those exceptionally cold mornings that causes the tiny amounts of moisture found in our double-pane windows to freeze into amazing fractals and patterns  This was a particularly interesting cluster, where the rounded frost forms collided with more straight-branched growth. I understand snowflake geometry, but this is a complete mystery to me! =D

I've seen the exact type of varied frost formation you're talking about in a store with double-paned freezer doors. Somehow a bit of moisture gets caught on the interior and freezes into a surprizing variety of patterns. It's made me wonder how one might go about deliberately building a device to try and deliberately cause these effects. I'm guessing part of the reson for the odd formations is that the ice exists or regularly passes near or into the melting temperature zone.
